Samuel Smith, hailed from Wareham, Dorset where he was a Master Brewer by trade. In 1847, bound for South Australia, he boarded the ship 'China' and founded The Yalumba Wine Company in 1849. He named his property 'Yalumba' an aboriginal word meaning 'all the land around'.
Yalumba is Australia's oldest family owned winery. Proud of its heritage, Yalumba upholds traditions such as the crafting of oak barrels. Yalumba is one of very few wineries in the world to enjoy the privilege of its own on-site cooperage.
Still family owned and fiercely independent, the Yalumba of today is an extremely progressive organisation. Ongoing winemaking and viticultural trials continue to build on Yalumba's reputation for innovation.
The winery's pioneering work with the rare grape variety, Viognier, is a success story that originated in the Yalumba Nursery. Having first planted Viognier in 1985, Yalumba is now recognised as the leader of this variety in the Southern Hemisphere with their flagship Viognier, 'The Virgilius', leading the way.
With the experience of over 150 years comes the confidence to dare to be different and challenge the status quo, in pursuit of the extra dimensions that set Yalumba wines apart.
Yalumba has access to both Barossa's outstanding and limited old vine resource as well as unique, high quality clones from both Australia and overseas. The results of these are particularly evident in Yalumba The Octavius Barossa Old Vine Shiraz, Yalumba Bush Vine Grenache and the entire range of Yalumba Viogniers now available.
With success intrinsically linked to the land, Yalumba is acutely aware of how its presence impacts the environment. Looking to the future, Yalumba is creating a sustainable business in which responsible environmental practice is integrated into everyday activities.
