|Winery Name:||Rosemount Estate, Australia
|Winemaker(s):||Charles Whish, Briony Hoare and Matt Koch|
|Other Details:||In 1968 Bob Oatley focused his energies upon the Australian wine industry and particularly that of NSW. His intention of growing premium wine grapes to supply to the emerging light wine industry was married with a desire to breed the very finest in thoroughbred horses and Charolais cattle - a desire which drew him towards the Hunter Valley, and then to Denman, in the far reaches of the ancient valley. Here, the happy combination of Australia's thoroughbred epicentre and pioneer vineyard developments compelled him to purchase open grazing land on the banks of the Goulburn River (a tributary of the Hunter).
Little did Bob imagine that his choice of settlement would turn the tranquil town of Denman into the hub of one of the world's largest premium wine export operations.
In 1969, Bob with his teenage children Sandy, Ian and Rosalind planted the first vines, working weekends and school holidays to help clear the ground and lay out the first fifty acres of valley floor vineyard. The Denman 'Home' Vineyard was established and what was to become one of the great stories of modern Australian wine history had begun.
The family soon discovered that they had purchased land that formed an integral part of the Upper Hunter Valley's long viticultural history. German migrant Carl Brecht had established the upper valley's first vineyard on the same Denman site in 1864, naming it "Rosemount" in deference to the local Scottish heritage that strongly features in the settlement of the region.
In a remarkable precursor to its latter day track-record, Brecht's export-focused, premium quality Rosemount wines had performed strongly in international wine competitions, winning gold medals in Paris, Montpellier, Calcutta and at the American Centennial in Philadelphia in 1876; and gold again at the Bordeaux exhibition of 1881.
Ultimately, Brecht sold the vineyard land to buy separate farms for his two sons, upon their return from the battlefields of France in 1918. When Bob Oatley acquired the land in the late 1960's, it had entirely reverted to cattle pasture, with only the original underground fermenting vats bearing witness to the vinous past.
