| Other Details: | In 1693, Simon van der Stel the second governor of the Cape of Good Hope allocated the original land at Fairview to Steven Vervey, who was almost certainly a French Huguenot. Archival records show that the first wine was made on Fairview in 1699. The farm passed through numerous owners until 1937 when Charles Back, an immigrant from Lithuania bought Fairview. The farm already had a reputation for its wines, which in those days were mostly fortified styles. Local anecdote refers to a doctor prescribing teaspoonfuls of Fairview wines to ailing children. |
